Heat, Pressure, Time and Transformation have all catalysed to create this magnificent crystal called Rhodonite. Rhodon meaning pink in Greek, is where it gets its name . Manganese mostly and sometimes iron and calcium combine together along with oxides to give the stone its strength and beauty.
Manganese is the core element in Rhodonite and has several corroborations in its application and uses. Commercially, it is known widely to be extracted to make steel and reinforce it.

Interestingly, ancient stories from Russia tell us that Eagles were known to keep these manganese rich stones next to their young ones in their nests, perhaps for protection. Legend has it that this was a custom followed ritualistically in Russia - to keep manganese rich rhodonite next to infants in their cribs to imbibe attributes of courage, strength and acuity, perhaps just like that of the eagle - making it quite an interesting co-relation.
It is fascinating that the element at the heart of Rhodonite also plays important biological roles within our own bodies. Manganese present in our body, though in small quantities, is essentially responsible for activating enzymes that aid bone formation, metabolism and cell defence. It is surely not a coincidence that this Rhodonite is physiologically connected with the strengthening of bones, healing wounds, promotes immunity and reduces fatigue. In the plant kingdom, its presence contributes to the essential function of photosynthesis. Like an alchemist, manganese splits water and releases oxygen. Fascinating isn't it!
The pink colour is attributed to the presence of manganese and instantly connects to the feminine side. Within modern crystal traditions, Rhodonite is often chosen as a companion during periods of emotional and physical transition, including the peri-menopausal and menopausal years. The black veins are testimony to the oxidisation of the manganese along with other elements. This deep, dark presence of the black veins supports emotional strength and grounding. This 'gentle giant' of a stone invokes inner talents and helps transformation of one's self through self love and compassion.
Manganese is almost like a quiet worker in the mineral kingdom and these nuances and connections simply guide us to delve deeper into the possibilities of some of the hidden secrets that these beautiful stones sacredly hold.
